In its homeland, the plant does not have many uses, although it can be used as a fence and for its juices with a psychotropic effect.
In Italy it is widely used as an ornamental plant, thanks to its rapid growth.
Like other species of the genus Echinopsis, it contains many alkaloids, including mescaline. However, in Italy, its cultivation is legal since the extraction of mescaline from this plant is rather complex and expensive and therefore not very profitable.
In the hobby cultivation of cacti it has great value thanks to its resistance, vigor and ease of reproduction, qualities that make it an excellent rootstock.

Effects and history

Mescaline is a hallucinogenic substance, the effects of which range from euphoria to real hallucinations. San Pedro has been consumed by people around the world as a natural psychedelic, but the natives of the Andes have long used it in propitiatory rituals. Even today this plant is used for both recreational and spiritual purposes.

It is difficult to accurately quantify the effects of psychedelics. However, after taking the San Pedro cactus, the most common effects are: re-emergence of past memories, sensitivity to light and colors, synesthesia, altered perception of time and visual hallucinations with closed and open eyes. The latter sensation is particularly fascinating for many mescaline users, as it can favor the visualization of geometric and mental patterns of various kinds.

Overall, the experience is similar to that caused by other hallucinogenic substances, due to the sense of spiritual enlightenment and connection with the universe perceived by the consumer.

The effects appear 1-2 hours after ingestion, and persist for another 2-4 hours, before gradually fading over the next 8 hours.

However, San Pedro can generate nausea and even vomiting before the trip begins. This event is considered a kind of inner “cleansing”, which allows the body and spirit to prepare for the psychedelic journey.

This plant is sold exclusively for ornamental purposes. Greenery srl assumes no responsibility for any improper use of the product.
